Sweden Has Halted Investigation into WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange

The Swedish prosecutor's office has decided to halt the investigation into criminal charges of rape and sexual offenses against Julian Assange, the founder of the controversial website WikiLeaks, according to a statement on WikiLeaks' Twitter page.

It was previously reported that a London court has decided to keep Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in custody, while the next technical hearings concerning his extradition to the United States will take place on December 13 and 19.

It is worth noting that in 2010, Assange was accused of rape and sexual offenses in Sweden. While in London, he voluntarily surrendered to the police, was detained, and later released on bail. In 2011, a decision was made to extradite him to Sweden, which he appealed.

In 2012, he sought asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he remained for seven years. In 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice filed charges against him, but those charges have been kept 'under seal.' If extradited to the U.S., he faces the possibility of lengthy imprisonment for espionage. Assange has repeatedly claimed that he could be killed if he is extradited to the U.S.
