Bright Armenia Proposes to Indicate Child's Gender on Birth Certificates
The Bright Armenia faction has introduced a draft law to amend the Republic of Armenia's law on civil status acts. The faction reports:
“Currently, the law does not require the indication of a child's gender on birth certificates. As a result, our citizens face various problems, especially in foreign countries. Furthermore, there can be other issues when a child's gender cannot be determined from just their name. Birth certificates in Germany and France include gender identification, and several states in the USA and many other countries also include that information.
In some languages, not specifying gender in birth certificates typically does not pose a problem because the corresponding feminine and masculine surnames change according to that language (for instance, in Russian: Соколов and Соколова), and sometimes even the first name (for example, in French: Michel and Michelle/Michèle).
Therefore, we propose the simplest solution to this issue: to provide a specific field in birth certificates to fill in the relevant information concerning the child's gender.”
