It's been a year of 'lawlessness' in Kocharian's case: Protest near the Supreme Judicial Council
Supporters of Robert Kocharian staged a protest today in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building. The participants claimed that there are violations against the judges who made decisions in Kocharian's case, and that the council is in a state of inaction. They urged the council to be a guarantor of judicial power within the framework of the law, ensuring the sovereignty of the judiciary and justice.
"The council is supposed to guarantee the functioning of the judicial system in Armenia in accordance with the law and the Constitution. In Kocharian's case, it has been a year of 'lawlessness', and a court has not been formed to adjudicate his detention issue," said the protesters.
During the protest, the organizers announced that they had been told by the Supreme Judicial Council that they were in a meeting and unable to meet with them at the moment. The participants emphasized their intention to wait until the end.
After more than two hours of protest in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building, Arman Khachatryan, the head of the council's press service, finally approached the demonstrators and asked them to present their demands in writing, as the council was currently holding a session and it was unclear when it would conclude.
After discussing among themselves, the protesters decided to submit their demands the following morning. They are seeking clarification on why there has been no judicial action in Kocharian's and others' cases, why artificial obstacles are being created, and what is the reason for the council's inaction.
It is noteworthy that earlier, supporters of the former president had conducted an awareness campaign near the offices of the Human Rights Defender and the Supreme Judicial Council.
