It Was a Political Decision: Zeynalyan on National Assembly's Refusal to Elect Constitutional Court Judge

Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan disagrees with the notion that the nomination of Vahe Grigoryan for the position of Constitutional Court member by President Armen Sarkissian raises legal issues. Speaking with reporters in the National Assembly, he noted that there is no constitutional prohibition against nominating Vahe Grigoryan for a second time.

“I believe there could not have been such a constitutional prohibition, as it would contradict human rights,” he said.

When asked if the negative vote on the candidates for Constitutional Court judge before the president nominates Vahe Grigoryan was a political decision, the minister replied, “Of course it was a political decision; it was a legal-political decision and could not be otherwise.”

Referring to Vahe Grigoryan personally, Zeynalyan remarked that he knows him, describing him as a thinker in terms of legal categories. “I believe he is impartial and is not constrained by any status. He is one of the best lawyers,” he added.
