Zelensky Proposes to Abandon Ukraine's NATO Membership on One Condition
Ahead of negotiations in Berlin, President Vladimir Zelensky has proposed to abandon Ukraine's NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees from the West, according to Reuters.
The details of the hours-long discussions between the politician and American representatives remain undisclosed and will continue today.
“Initially, Ukraine's desire was to join NATO; these are real security guarantees. Some partners from the U.S. and Europe have not supported this approach,” Zelensky stated.
He described the change in stance as a 'compromise' by Kyiv, adding that alternative security guarantees should be legally binding and include participation from the U.S., Canada, Japan, and European countries.
