Syrian Foreign Minister to Visit Washington for the First Time in 25 Years: Axios
The Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Mekdad, will meet with American lawmakers in Washington this week to discuss the potential lifting of remaining U.S. sanctions against his country. Senator Lindsey Graham was quoted by Axios.
It is also expected that the Syrian Foreign Minister will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Graham has indicated that he would support the lifting of sanctions if Syria officially commits to progressing towards an agreement on security issues with Israel, as well as joining the coalition against the Islamic State extremist group.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that the U.S. State Department has not yet commented on the news regarding Mekdad's visit.
This will be the first visit by a Syrian Foreign Minister to Washington in over 25 years.
