Trump Will Impose 100% Tariffs on India and China for Purchasing Russian Oil
U.S. President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on products imported from India and China to increase pressure on Russia, from which these countries are purchasing oil. This is reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.
Trump presented this proposal during a meeting in Washington with senior officials from the European Union and the United States. The meeting discussed ways to increase economic pressure on Moscow to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
“The president believes that the obvious approach is to impose serious tariffs on everyone and maintain them until China agrees to stop buying [Russian] oil. There really aren't many alternative sources for that oil,” said another U.S. official.
Notably, Trump had previously imposed a 25% tariff on India for continuing to purchase oil from Russia. Later, those tariffs were raised to 50%.
It is also worth mentioning that during discussions with European leaders, Trump stated that Europe should pressure China to also cease purchases of Russian oil and gas. Additionally, he demanded that Europe stop buying Russian oil, as the EU is effectively “financing” the war. According to U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, European countries need to halt their purchases of Russian oil and gas if they want Washington to tighten sanctions against Moscow.
