Toxic Ingredient in Gel Nail Polish May Cause Fertility Issues
Europe is banning a "toxic" ingredient found in gel nail polish that could lead to fertility issues. This chemical, known as TPO, is commonly used in gel polishes to accelerate drying and maintain color.
Due to the risks associated with fertility, the use of this ingredient has been prohibited in most parts of Europe, yet it remains freely available in the United States, according to Euronews.
Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) has now been officially banned in all cosmetic products after EU regulatory bodies classified it as a potentially toxic substance for humans. The substance helps gel nail polish to harden under ultraviolet light and keeps colors vibrant for a longer time.
Before the ban, studies were conducted on animals, which showed that the use of this substance led to fertility problems. This prompted the EU to take precautionary measures. Research is ongoing.
