The EU3 Ready to Reinstate Sanctions Against Iran
France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have informed the UN that they are prepared to reinstate sanctions against Iran, according to a joint letter. The letter, addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council, states that the three European powers "are committed to using all diplomatic tools at their disposal to ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons" if Tehran fails to meet their deadline for negotiations.
Iran claims that its nuclear program is for civilian purposes and denies any ambition to develop nuclear weapons.
This warning comes amid escalating tensions surrounding Iran's cessation of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Iran halted cooperation with the UN's nuclear watchdog after Israel launched a 12-day military campaign against it in June. During that period, Iran was negotiating with the United States regarding its nuclear program before Washington later conducted airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during the conflict.
