We Can Decide What the Next Step Is: Trump
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, considers it impossible to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine before signing a peace agreement. This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with CNN on Friday.
“Trump said, ‘Why should I talk about security guarantees? Let’s first sign a peace treaty,’” Rubio noted. “That does not mean that the security guarantees cannot be part of the negotiations, but an agreement is needed first. What kind of peace are we guaranteeing if we don’t have a peace agreement?”
Rubio emphasized that in order to halt the conflict, the demands of both sides need to be clarified first. “What does Russia need to stop fighting, what does Ukraine need to stop fighting? And when that is done, then we can decide what the next step is,” the Secretary of State added.
