Defeat with the Worst Result and Expected Victory: Bundestag Elections
According to preliminary official data, the CDU/CSU coalition led by Friedrich Merz has won the German Bundestag elections, as expected. The second place goes to the right-wing populist party 'Alternative for Germany,' achieving its best result in history. Olaf Scholz's left-center Social Democratic Party (SPD) has come in third, recording its worst result ever. This is reported by the Russian service of BBC.
Voter turnout was 84%, the highest since 1990. Friedrich Merz, the leader of the winning CDU/CSU coalition, is the main candidate for the position of chancellor. However, the vote for the new chancellor in the Bundestag will only take place after the formation of the governing coalition.
After the elections, Merz stated during a debate with party leaders that he hopes to form a coalition government by Easter, or April 20.
