Trump Proposes Death Penalty for Drug Traffickers
U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that governors enact state-level laws that would impose the death penalty for illegal drug trafficking. "I believe you can do this at the state level—death penalty for those dealing drugs. But only do it if you really want to get rid of drugs," Trump stated during a working meeting with governors.
Trump had previously lifted the federal moratorium on the death penalty for federal criminal cases that was established by the previous Democratic administration. Additionally, the death penalty is applied in 27 states, and prosecutors can seek it for violent crimes and other severe offenses.
During his campaign, Trump promised to address the issue of the dangerous opioid fentanyl crisis in the U.S., noting that around 100,000 people die from overdoses of this drug each year. Among the victims of illegal drug trafficking are also notable figures. Furthermore, drug trafficking is linked to many other types of criminal activities and illegal immigration.
