Iran Planned to Assassinate Trump
On October 7, Farhad Shakiri, a 51-year-old agent of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was assigned to plan the assassination of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. He had at least two accomplices monitoring the target, both of whom have been apprehended.
Shakiri himself is located in Iran and was tasked with leading the network of perpetrators. He faces a maximum sentence of 100 years in prison on a range of charges, which have been filed against him in absentia.
“The Department of Justice has charged an official of the Iranian regime who was instructed to lead a network of criminal associates to carry out Iran's plans to assassinate its targets, including newly-elected President Donald Trump,” stated Attorney General Merrick Garland.
