Corruption Scandal: Former Albanian President Arrested
Ilir Meta, the former President of Albania, has been arrested on suspicion of corruption. This was reported by the Koha news portal on October 21.
The Albanian leader is accused of concealing assets and participating in corrupt schemes with his wife during 2009-2010. "The investigation has also revealed that the couple entered into corrupt relationships with a businessman, temporarily using a villa as compensation for the illegal influence exerted on state officials appointed by the media," stated a declaration from the country’s Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, which was quoted by Koha.
Previously, Meta had denied any involvement in illegal financial transactions and stated that he has never engaged in such activities.
