Yerevan is Pursuing a Policy of Self-Isolation, Says Hajiyeva
Azerbaijan has always been in favor of opening communications in the region, said Ayhan Hajiyev, spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an interview with Report.
“For a long time, efforts have been made to advance this process within the framework of the trilateral statement made by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia, and Armenia on November 10, 2020. The Armenian side has assumed certain obligations under this document. The 9th point of the trilateral statement clearly outlines the obligations of Armenia and how the control of transport communications will be organized. However, Armenia has not fulfilled its obligations for nearly 4 years regarding the opening of communications connecting Azerbaijan's western regions with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Taking this into account, Azerbaijan has considered alternative routes. For example, Azerbaijan has signed an agreement on the construction of a road and railway through Iran, which will provide direct transportation links to Nakhchivan.
The work carried out over these years is evidence that, unlike Armenia, Azerbaijan is making significant contributions to the development of transport corridors in the region. If the Armenian side is genuinely interested in opening communications in the region, it must fulfill its assumed obligations. Yerevan, with its destructive stance, once again proves that it is pursuing a policy of self-isolation,” Hajiyev stated.
