Development of Nuclear Weapons in South Korea Could Significantly Harm Military Alliance with the US
The development of nuclear weapons in South Korea could significantly harm the military alliance with the United States. This was stated by South Korea's Minister of National Defense, Shin Won-sik, in an interview with Reuters.
“There will be a significant rift in the alliance with the US, and if we abandon the non-proliferation treaty, it will lead to various consequences, including an immediate shock in the financial market,” the minister said.
He added that strengthening 'extended deterrence' remains “the simplest, most effective, and peaceful way” for Seoul to respond to North Korea's nuclear missile program.
