Nikol Pashinyan on the Possibility of a Referendum for Armenia's Accession to the EU
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia is ready to approach the EU as much as the EU considers it possible. He made this announcement during the 'Armenian Forum of Democracy.'
'If I thought that the people of Armenia do not support this idea, I would not have made such a statement. Now, the question is whether to hold a referendum to determine the people's opinion. Excuse me, as an official who is authorized to represent the people of Armenia, I know the opinion of the people of Armenia,' he said.
Pashinyan noted that if a referendum is held, a campaign would be necessary. 'In that case, people will ask us questions like how, when, and by what steps; does the EU want us or not? They will ask whether the EU is ready to accept us. I cannot answer that question because processes are also occurring within the EU, elections are taking place, the outcomes of which raise at least some questions. We have declared at the highest level our political will,' he added.
