Julian Assange Released from Prison and Departed the UK, WikiLeaks Reports
The London Supreme Court has released WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on bail. He had been held at London's Belmarsh prison since 2019.
According to RTVI, citing a statement from the organization on the X social network, the journalist has reached a deal with the U.S. Attorney's Office.
"Julian Assange is free. On the morning of June 24, he left the high-security Belmarsh prison after spending 1901 days there. The London Supreme Court released him on bail, and today at noon he boarded a plane at Stansted Airport and left the UK," states WikiLeaks.
The organization described the journalist's release as the result of a "global campaign" involving "press freedom activists, lawmakers, and leaders across the political spectrum, including the UN."
"This has paved the way for long-term negotiations with the U.S. Department of Justice, which led to a deal that has yet to be officially concluded. We will provide additional information as soon as possible," the message on X reads.
WikiLeaks representatives noted that Assange has departed for Australia, where his wife and children are located.
