Aliyev Condoles Putin
The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has sent a condolence telegram to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the events in Dagestan.
"I am deeply shocked by the news of the deaths of civilians and law enforcement officers as a result of the terrorist acts in Dagestan. We strongly condemn these bloody crimes and support the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism. On behalf of the people of Azerbaijan and personally, I extend my sincere condolences to you, to the families and friends of the victims, and wish a swift recovery to all the injured," the letter states.
On the evening of June 23, a series of attacks took place on a synagogue and church in Derbent, as well as on a church, synagogue, and traffic police department in Makhachkala. More than 15 police officers and several civilians were killed as a result. Six militants were also killed, among whom were the sons and nephew of Magomed Omarov, the head of the Sergokalyinsky district of the republic.
The motives behind the attacks remain unknown.
