Biden Changes US Nuclear Strategy
US President Joe Biden has signed new guidance on the application of nuclear weapons by the United States. This was announced by Pranay Vaddin, senior director for arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation at the National Security Council, during a meeting of the Arms Control Association.
“The President has recently signed updated information regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons, which takes into account the realities of a new nuclear era. It emphasizes the need to rely on the growth and diversity of the nuclear arsenal, while simultaneously stressing the necessity to deter Russia, China, and North Korea,” he stated.
Washington will remain committed to further measures regarding the treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms Reductions and Limitations, provided Moscow fulfills its obligations under the agreement, Vaddin added. Russia and the US signed an agreement on Strategic Offensive Arms Reductions and Limitations in 2010. The document discussed the reduction of strategic nuclear forces to a level of 700 deployed and, in total, 800 deployed and non-deployed strategic launchers.
