Chief of Staff Orders Niger’s Armed Forces to Achieve Maximum Readiness
The newly appointed Chief of Staff of Niger's Armed Forces, Musa Salahu Barmu, has ordered the military to achieve maximum readiness. According to a urgent radio broadcast quoted by RIA Novosti, Barmu stated, "Upon receiving this message, all personnel should be brought to maximum readiness."
Barmu emphasized that the decision was made in response to significantly increased threats of aggression against Niger, aiming to ensure an adequate response.
Previously, it was reported that the rebels who seized power in Niger appointed Barmu, who had trained in the United States, as the Chief of Staff. In late July, Nigerien soldiers announced on national television their removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from power.
Most Western countries and ECOWAS leaders condemned the coup. In early August, ECOWAS nations adopted a plan to implement military intervention if necessary in Niger.
