Donald Trump Faces Potential 136 Years in Prison
The charges brought against former U.S. President Donald Trump suggest a maximum prison sentence of 136 years. This was reported by Fox News.
However, it is noted that the actual punishment will likely be much less should he be found guilty of any or all of the charges. Earlier, the former president was indicted on 34 counts related to the falsification of business records and criminal conspiracy.
The network elaborates that falsification of business records is generally considered a misdemeanor in New York, but as a felony, it carries a maximum sentence of four years when the defendant's fraudulent intention includes the intent to commit another crime or conceal the commission of a crime.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He has become the first former leader in U.S. history to face criminal prosecution.
In January 2018, The Wall Street Journal published an article stating that Trump allegedly had an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2006, and just before the 2016 presidential election, he paid her $130,000 for her silence. Trump himself has assured that he had no personal relationship with Daniels.
The former president and his allies have repeatedly claimed that the charges against him are politically motivated.
