Canada's Foreign Minister Calls on Azerbaijan
Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has called on Azerbaijan to reopen the Lachin corridor and to release Armenian prisoners of war during parliamentary hearings.
According to Armenian News Agency Armenpress, during a discussion in the Canadian Parliament, MP Jean Yip presented concerns from Canada’s Armenian community regarding the rising tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The MP reminded that the Lachin corridor has been blocked for more than 100 days, leading to a humanitarian crisis. Jean Yip asked Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly to outline the steps taken by the Canadian government regarding this issue.
“I share the concerns of the Armenian Canadians and the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. We continue to call on the Azerbaijani authorities to reopen the Lachin corridor; we must prevent the worsening of the humanitarian crisis. Canada supports the ceasefire agreement of 2020, including the return of Armenian prisoners of war,” said Mélanie Joly.
The head of Canada’s foreign affairs department emphasized the importance of respecting the ceasefire, which is also supported by the EU monitoring group.
