Chaos in the Opposition Field: Is the Statement About Elections a Bluff?
According to well-informed sources from the "Zhoghovurd" newspaper, there is true chaos in the Armenian opposition field. The leaders of the parties involved in the "Homeland Salvation Movement" are in favor of not removing the proportional representation system from the Electoral Code, as they believe it will help them gather the desired votes in the elections.
However, since the authorities intend to remove the proportional representation system from the code, this has created dissatisfaction within the opposition. Our sources indicate that there is even discussion about the possibility that if Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan takes the path of removing proportional representation from the Electoral Code, they might not participate in the elections, as it would result in a Yerevan parliament that does not represent the regions.
Our sources also report that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is in favor of maintaining the proportional representation system, but 40 percent of his team is against continuing its operation. It is worth noting that the Electoral Code is a constitutional law, and it is also necessary for it to be adopted in conditions of political consensus, so removing it would require the opposition's consent.
The opposition is also concerned about the possibility that Nikol Pashinyan's announcement of calling for snap parliamentary elections on June 20 could be a significant bluff, as it seems he has no intention of proceeding with snap parliamentary elections.
As for what resolution this issue will reach, it is difficult to say, as everyone is currently holding their breath, waiting for when Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will submit his resignation, which is expected between April 20 and 30.
