UN Declared Principle Failed to Protect Real Individuals in Our Lives, Tatoian Sends Message
The Human Rights Defender of Armenia has sent a message on the occasion of Human Rights Day.
In the message, he states:
“Dear compatriots, today, on December 10, the international community celebrates Human Rights Day. On this day in 1948, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, establishing human rights, peace, and development as crucial pillars of its work.
The year 2020 was marked by fundamental widespread and systematic violations of the rights of our compatriots by Azerbaijani armed forces, with many instances of cruelty, torture, and inhumane treatment occurring simply because they are Armenian. Unfortunately, the international civilized community has yet to adequately assess all of this, and the principle declared in the UN's '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development' that 'no one should be left behind and no right should be ignored' has not become a guiding principle for protecting real individuals in our lives.
Each of us must make every effort to fully protect the rights of our compatriots both inside and outside the country. Respect for human dignity and the guarantee of each of their rights in an atmosphere of solidarity and mutual respect is a crucial mission for all of us.
On Human Rights Day, I would like to highlight the role of those defenders, journalists, and lawyers who work every day to guarantee human rights. Within the scope of my status as the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, my daily work and efforts are aimed at improving the existing mechanisms for ensuring human rights in our country, raising public awareness, identifying existing issues, and contributing to their solutions, from children to the elderly, whether in closed or care institutions, law enforcement bodies, or community establishments.”
