Explanation of the Word ‘Györbagyör’ Presented by Iranologist Vardan Voskanyan

Iranologist Vardan Voskanyan has presented the explanation of the word ‘györbagyör’ on his Facebook page. “Many seem to think that the origin of the word ‘györbagyör’, which entered the Armenian dialect through Turkish mediation, is also Turkish. However, we are actually dealing with a new Persian form: گور به گور in classical pronunciation [gōr ba gōr] (modern pronunciation [gur be gur]), which translates to ‘from grave to grave’, consisting of گور [gōr] meaning ‘grave’ and به [ba] as a preposition of direction.
It is noteworthy that in Armenian dialects, there are other forms made with this Persian prefix, such as ‘darbedar’ < contemporary Persian در به در [dar be dar], meaning ‘from door to door’, and also the Armenian word ‘eres’ in Yerevan, which is ‘eresberes’ – ‘face to face, in person’:
