24-Year-Old Charged with Deadly Hit-and-Run and Leaving the Scene of the Accident
The Investigation Committee of Armenia has revealed that a 24-year-old man, while in an intoxicated state, on September 5, 2020, around 10:00 PM, committed violations contrary to the requirements of point 67 of the road traffic rules at the beginning of the tunnel leading from Agatangeghos Street to Khanzhyan Street in Yerevan. As a result, he failed to apply the brakes in time to ensure traffic safety and prevent the accident, subsequently hitting a 73-year-old pedestrian and causing his death due to negligence.
The driver of the Suzuki vehicle fled the scene of the traffic accident. Based on sufficient evidence obtained, the 24-year-old has been charged under Article 242 (Violations relating to ensuring traffic safety or rules of operation of vehicles) and Article 244 (Leaving the scene of a traffic accident) of the Armenian Criminal Code. The investigator has submitted a motion to the court requesting the selection of detention as a pretrial measure, which has been granted.
The preliminary investigation is ongoing.
