Curfew Imposed in Washington as Tensions Remain High
Representatives of the U.S. Capitol Police knelt during a silent protest in the capital, Washington. According to CNN, at least three officers knelt, two of whom were African American, and one was white. Earlier, protesters chanted "take a knee" to express their concern about police brutality.
A decision has been made to impose a curfew in Washington from 11:00 PM until 6:00 AM on Thursday. Nineteen individuals were arrested for violating the curfew set the day before. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that authorities have allowed peaceful demonstrations to take place. The curfew will also be in effect tonight in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Oakland, and Solano County.
In several cities across various states in the U.S., the issue is not so much the protests as the vandals who are destroying everything during the night. According to BBC News, four former police officers have been charged in connection with the murder of an African American. Among them, Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on the neck of a Black youth and suffocated him, faces the most serious charges. The other three were present at the incident, and they face up to 40 years in prison and hefty fines according to the charges brought against them.
