Khachatryan Sisters Appeal to UN Representative
The Khachatryan sisters, accused of murdering their father Mikhael Khachatryan, have appealed to Dubravka Simonovic, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women. They requested that Russian authorities prevent them from experiencing trauma again during the investigation of their case, and to ensure that their rights are not violated in the future.
This was reported by TASS, citing Valentina Frolova, the lawyer for the youngest sister. The lawyer stated that to avoid such outcomes, the sisters' case should be considered collectively, taking into account that the girls acted out of necessity for protection.
“The investigative bodies have separated the sisters' criminal cases, isolating Maria Khachatryan's case, which has negatively impacted the defense of the defendants' rights. Despite the fact that the same circumstances are being investigated within the framework of both cases, Kristina and Angelina are not able to participate in Maria's case, nor does Maria have the opposite opportunity,” she said.
Frolova noted that if this situation continues, it may again traumatize the sisters, as they will recount the same events during the proceedings of two separate criminal cases.
