Belarusians Will Eat Me After Such a Decision: Lukashenko
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that the republic cannot be a part of any country, even that of 'our brotherly Russia.'
“We have our own country. We are sovereign and independent. And we cannot be a part of anyone’s country. I cannot betray you by merging Belarus, not even with our brotherly Russia,” said Lukashenko. The president’s remarks were quoted by the state agency 'BelTA.'
According to the head of state, in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he “clearly and unequivocally stated one and a half to two years ago that this cannot be done in Belarus.”
“Even if I were to agree to (Belarus joining the Russian federation), then the Belarusians would eat me within a year of making such a decision,” Lukashenko noted.
“I do not want to be the last president of Belarus. It is honorable to be the first, but I do not want to be the last,” the president added.
