Airbase 'Balad' Targeted by Missile Attack in Iraq

The 'Balad' airbase located north of Baghdad, Iraq, has come under missile fire. According to the Associated Press, referencing Iraqi security forces, the attack has resulted in injuries to four individuals.

The airbase serves as a hub for American military instructors, advisors, and representatives of companies involved in the servicing of American F-16 fighter jets. No American military personnel were reported to be among the casualties.

CNN also reported that there were no representatives from the command structure of the U.S.-led international coalition at the airbase during the incident. The network noted that eight missiles were fired at the base, injuring four officers from the Iraqi Air Force. Preliminary assessments suggest that the missiles may have been of a homemade variety.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The airbase, situated several dozen kilometers from Baghdad, is primarily occupied by non-Iraqi personnel, which makes 'Balad' a frequent target for militants opposed to the presence of U.S. troops and their allies in Iraq.

It is worth mentioning that the 'Balad' airbase was also subjected to missile attacks on January 4, prompting Shia factions to advise Iraqi military personnel to steer clear of U.S. bases.
