Armenia Significantly Improves Its Position in Human Development Ranking, Securing 81st Place
Armenia is classified in the high human development category according to data for 2018, ranking 81st among 189 countries and UN-recognized territories. The results of the 2019 Human Development Report were presented in Yerevan by UN Resident Coordinator Shombi Sharp.
“Armenia has recorded significant changes, with considerable progress noted in the Human Development Index (HDI). In 2018, Armenia achieved the 81st position. This is a significant achievement and should be definitely appreciated,” said Sharp.
From 1990 to 2018, Armenia's HDI indicator increased from 0.633 to 0.760, marking a 20 percent growth. Life expectancy increased by 7.1 percent, while expected years of schooling rose by 2.3 years. The country’s gross national income per capita grew by approximately 157.7 percent during the period from 1990 to 2018.
Sharp noted that the UN team collaborates closely with the government, representatives of civil society, and the private sector on sustainable value systems, food security, inclusive markets, human rights, and other areas.
The top five countries in the 2018 HDI global ranking are Norway, Switzerland, Ireland, Germany, and Hong Kong. The lowest HDI rankings are held by Burundi, South Sudan, Chad, the Central African Republic, and Niger.
