One Person Dies Daily from Car Accidents, Points System Could Improve Situation: Simonyan

Numerous citizens have been inquiring about the status of the points system regarding the new legislative initiative for the issuance of driver’s licenses, and why it has yet to be presented in parliament and adopted. This was stated by Karen Simonyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia faction, during the parliamentary announcement hour.

He reminded that under the roadmap of the deep and comprehensive association agreement with the European Union, Armenia has an obligation to improve the procedure for issuing driving licenses by July 2019. “In other words, we should have had a new procedure by July, with licenses issued in accordance with EU standards. However, there has been no progress in this direction until today,” he said.

Simonyan then presented statistics. “To put it figuratively, today in Armenia one person dies every day. Over the past nine months, the number of fatalities from accidents in Armenia has reached 253, which is an increase of 11 compared to the previous year. Additionally, we have numerous injured individuals from accidents every day, and we have not managed to eliminate this problem,” he remarked.

The deputy expressed the opinion that the points system, which was adopted in the first reading and halted afterward, could bring about a change in this situation and lead to some improvement in the catastrophic state of the roads. “This system would contribute to improving the situation. I hope the law will come for a second reading in a short time and be adopted,” he said.

The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, also noted that this issue is on the agenda, and the agenda has been accepted.
