New Independence Referendum to Be Held in Scotland

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced that a referendum on independence and a new vote on Brexit will take place. The minister made the announcement during a 'Stop Brexit' event in Glasgow, according to The New York Times.

“It is time for Scotland to take control of its future,” stated the minister. She emphasized that if Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom, it will face a series of issues including budget cuts, the takeover of Scottish authorities, child poverty, and the dire consequences of the Brexit deal, which could lead to job losses and a decline in quality of life.

Sturgeon accused the UK government of keeping Scotland in chaos. It should be noted that according to the results of the 2014 referendum, 55 percent of Scots voted in favor of independence from Great Britain.
