Turkey Sets World Record for Number of Imprisoned Journalists

The International Press Institute has published a report stating that there are currently 120 journalists imprisoned in Turkey, marking the worst statistic in the world. This information comes from diken.com.tr.

Even after the state of emergency was lifted, the figure remains unchanged. Since the attempted military coup on July 15, 2016, approximately 150,000 academics, judges, and civil servants have been dismissed from their jobs due to suspicions related to the coup attempt.

The report by the International Press Institute, which studies media worldwide, also mentions that serious charges have been brought against journalists in custody in Turkey, including alleged connections with terrorist groups.

After the state of emergency, the number of imprisoned journalists dropped from 160 to 120, but even with this statistic, Turkey continues to hold the top position globally.
