Government Plans to Renovate 'Armavir' Penitentiary's Semi-Open Correctional Facility
The government plans to carry out major renovations of the semi-open correctional facility at the 'Armavir' penitentiary. For the preparation of the necessary project documentation, the government decided to allocate 2.6 million drams to the penitentiary service during today's session.
According to the Ministry of Justice, inmates serving sentences in the semi-open correctional facility are held in a single common accommodation, and there are no designated recreational areas for those incarcerated in the semi-open facility. Inmates also lack the right to move freely during the day.
A decree from the Minister of Justice in 2012 established that 83 inmates are supposed to serve their sentences in the semi-open correctional facility at the penitentiary. However, the physical conditions of the facility are inadequate for the proper sanctioning of the inmates, both from a legislative and safety perspective.
