Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the Pre-Signed Agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alen Berset, welcomed the pre-signing of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington. According to the official, this paves the way for the final resolution of the long-standing conflict between the two countries.
“I commend the leaders and citizens of both countries for their political will, perseverance, and courage in pursuing a just and lasting peace. Overcoming decades of mistrust, territorial disputes, and humanitarian challenges requires difficult but necessary compromises from all parties involved,” he noted.
“We call on both countries to do their utmost to continue moving forward towards peace, not only to rebuild trust, connections, and infrastructure but also to actively strengthen our core values—democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, including through the full and effective implementation of European Court of Human Rights decisions,” among other points, the statement emphasized.
