YouTube to Stop Displaying Videos Promoting Beauty Standards to Teenagers
YouTube has committed to protecting teenagers from content that promotes so-called beauty ideals, the company announced on Thursday, as reported by РИА Новости.
“Unlike adults, teenagers are more susceptible to forming negative opinions about themselves when they are constantly exposed to standardized images of beauty in the online content they consume... we are globally limiting the repeated recommendations of videos related to this topic,” the company's statement read.
Content that experts deem safe in limited amounts, but which can lead to mental health issues if viewed repeatedly, pertains to the idealization of physical traits and certain forms of beauty, ideal body fitness levels or specific weights, as well as videos containing non-contact forms of social aggression, including bullying.
