Grossi Receives Response from Iranian President Regarding Enriched Uranium Issue
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, addressed Iran's nuclear program in an interview with Al Arabiya, expressing concern over the ongoing accumulation of the country’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. He stated that he has received a response from Iran's new President, Masoud Pezeshkian, indicating the possibility of resuming dialogue aimed at ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear activities.
Grossi emphasized the need for greater transparency and cooperation from Iran, especially in light of the development of its nuclear capabilities. Additionally, he commented on broader issues of nuclear weapons proliferation and the importance of reducing risks of nuclear escalation, particularly regarding the IAEA’s role in regions of heightened tension.
He highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and the necessity for international cooperation in effectively addressing these issues. In August, the Associated Press published a confidential IAEA report indicating that Iran has further increased its stockpiles of uranium intended for weapons, contrary to international demands. According to the report, as of August 17, Iran possesses 164.7 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, which is 22.6 kilograms more than reported in the IAEA’s previous report in May. Uranium enriched to 60% purity is merely a small technical step away from reaching weapons-grade levels of 90%.
