Video: Today Iran Holds Second Round of Presidential Elections; Armenian Ambassador in Yerevan Also Votes
In the Islamic Republic of Iran, today marks the second round of the extraordinary presidential elections. Early in the morning, a polling station was also opened at the Iranian embassy in Yerevan, allowing Iranian citizens to participate in the voting process.
Voters initially put their fingerprint on the ballot paper, then in the voting booth, they write the name of their preferred candidate and drop the ballot into the ballot box. Similar to the first round, today’s elections also see participation from the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Iran in Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, who has already cast his vote.
It is important to note that there are three polling stations operating in Armenia for the presidential elections of the Islamic Republic of Iran: at the Blue Mosque in Yerevan, at the Iranian embassy in Yerevan, and at the Iranian consulate in Kapan.
Presidential extraordinary elections in Iran took place on June 28. None of the candidates surpassed the passing threshold in the first round, leading to the announcement of a second round of elections.
The extraordinary presidential elections were initiated following the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. After the accident on May 19 in northwestern Iran, the authorities, adhering to the Constitution, declared new presidential elections. According to Article 131 of Iran's Constitution, these elections must take place within 50 days following the announcement of the president’s death or incapacity, and the transfer of his responsibilities to the first vice president, who has been Mohammad Mohber.
