US Considers Military Intervention in Niger

American authorities consider military intervention in Niger as a last resort after all attempts to resolve the situation diplomatically. This was stated by Vedant Patel, the deputy spokesperson for the State Department, during a press briefing.

“ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) has clearly indicated that military intervention should be a last resort,” Patel said. He clarified that Washington is focused on reaching a diplomatic solution. The spokesperson emphasized that the United States is in close contact with ECOWAS and is striving for a peaceful resolution of the situation.

According to Le Figaro, there are currently about 1,300 American soldiers in Niger. The troops are concentrated at bases in the northern part of the country, including Niamey and Agadez. The Agadez base is strategically important for the US as it hosts a drone launch pad and serves as an observation center for North-West Africa.
