Still undecided on how to deal with the Rome Statute: "Zhoghovurd"

“The Government of Armenia has not yet decided how it will deal with the Rome Statute. As it is known, on March 24, the Constitutional Court of Armenia declared that the Rome Statute, which serves as the basis for the International Criminal Court, is in line with the country's Constitution, and the Armenian government can continue the process of ratifying the agreement.” This was reported by the newspaper “Zhoghovurd.”

Following this circumstance, various statements were also made about how this step takes Armenia against Russia, and at the behest of the West, Vladimir Putin will be arrested as soon as he enters Yerevan. According to Article 116 of the Constitution of Armenia, it is the National Assembly that ratifies international treaties, meaning that without the parliament's approval, the Rome Statute cannot come into effect. After the Constitutional Court's decision, the Armenian government has three months to send the matter of ratification to the parliament.

The newspaper “Zhoghovurd” approached the Armenian government to understand when it would be sent to the parliament. Interestingly, the government has requested a month to respond to our inquiry. As mentioned, the government had three months to make a decision; one month has already passed. According to our information, authorities currently do not yet have a final decision regarding the convention; at least, the executive has not yet sent the statute to the legislative body.
