UN Security Council Unable to Determine the Fate of the World, Says Erdogan on Need for Reforms

The UN Security Council requires radical reform due to its inability to determine the fate of humanity. This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during an iftar dinner organized for foreign ambassadors accredited in the capital on Tuesday, in connection with the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims.

“The UN Security Council needs urgent and comprehensive reforms, as it is unable to determine the fate of humanity,” said the Turkish president.

Erdogan has repeatedly pointed out the necessity of reforming the UN system, noting that “the world is more than five,” referring to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, the USA, China, the United Kingdom, and France) who hold veto power and can block any resolution if they so wish.

The Turkish president's fundamental theses on the need for UN reform are outlined in the book titled “A More Just World is Possible,” published in September 2021. In that book, he draws attention to issues in global politics such as the migration crisis, international terrorism, Islamophobia, discrimination, and double standards.

According to him, Turkey will continue its efforts aimed at UN reform “until a system is established where power will belong to those who are right, and not conversely, where those who are strong are deemed to be right.”
