Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, after a meeting with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan, addressed the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict at a joint press conference. He stated that there should always be efforts to find paths for reconciliation between the parties and to balance interests. This is how Russia, as an ally of Armenia and a strategic partner of Azerbaijan, acted when it halted the war in 2020.

“I do not want to delve into history, but everyone knows that there was an opportunity to achieve a ceasefire sooner than it eventually occurred. But I leave that to historians to study how it happened. We are in favor of strictly implementing all tripartite agreements reached between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia, without any improvisations, first and foremost the agreements signed on the night of November 9/10, 2020. And the issue of the Lachin corridor must be viewed exclusively in this context. Only the comprehensive implementation of all aspects of the agreements related to the Lachin corridor, without exceptions, can resolve the current situation. This is what our peacekeepers are currently occupied with,” Lavrov said.

It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan blocked the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia, the Lachin corridor, on December 12.
