Authoritarian Azerbaijan Threatens Democratic Armenia: Freedom House
The international rights organization Freedom House has published its report for 2023, which also addresses Armenia. The report discusses various issues, including the threat posed by authoritarian countries to democracies.
“Democratization has also failed to stabilize in certain countries of the region. Most of the states that emerged after the collapse of the USSR continue to be dominated by 'strongmen' (autocrats) who have transformed Soviet-era ties into kleptocratic networks, enriching their family members while impoverishing ordinary citizens. These corrupt authoritarian regimes have similarly instigated instability and threatened democracies throughout the region. Besides Moscow's war against Ukraine, other conflicts present themselves as border clashes, such as the tensions between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and the growing threats posed by Azerbaijani forces against Armenia,” the report states.
