Germany Unable to Provide Free Weapons to Ukraine, Scholz
The Federal Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has stated that Germany is unlikely to be able to supply weapons to Ukraine from its own stockpiles, as these have been nearly depleted. This is reported by die Welt.
“Since the Bundeswehr no longer has large reserves to hand over, a list is being developed in collaboration with the German industry and the Ukrainian government regarding what can be delivered to the country,” he said.
According to Scholz, Ukraine could purchase weapons produced in Germany to “resist the Russian offensive.” The Chancellor explained that, for example, German Leopard tanks would not be useful in Ukraine due to the lack of experience in operating such equipment. Instead, weapons should continue to come from Eastern European countries, with which the Ukrainian army has some familiarity, he concluded.
