Video: We have reached an agreement on delimitation with Aliyev, says Pashinyan
Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan has provided details of the agreements reached during the trilateral meeting held in Brussels on April 6. Pashinyan shared information about his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and European Council President Charles Michel during his speech in the National Assembly.
“Yes, I have agreed that the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan begin preparatory work for a peace treaty. What does this practically entail, what will be the timeline, what format—that still needs to be discussed and decided. But signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, as quickly as possible, yes, is part of our plans. However, I must say that we do not have illusions here either because we do not exclude that Azerbaijan may try to lead the peace negotiation process into a deadlock as a pretext for new aggression against Armenia and Artsakh,” the Prime Minister stated.
According to him, understanding and calculating all risks and challenges, they have concluded that remaining at the same point and failing to ensure certain progress in the process does not only not reduce but rather escalates the risks.
“This is why we have also reached an agreement in Brussels on the issue of delimitation—to create a bilateral commission on delimitation and border security issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan by the end of April and to begin work. What is our strategy in this matter? To clarify Azerbaijan’s official positions regarding the borders, to officially record Armenia’s positions on the same issue, to ensure our positions are maximally legitimate, meaning to use only de jure significant facts and arguments in the border clarification process, to obtain recognition of this legitimacy from the international community, and on this basis reach an agreement on the Armenia-Azerbaijan borders. What does this mean? It means that in the delimitation process, we will rely on de jure significant facts for the clarification of the territory of the Republic of Armenia and not on desires or conversations, because I already mentioned the dangers of such a course of action,” said Pashinyan.
