Zelensky Proposes Meeting with Ukraine, Germany, and Turkey Participation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested convening a meeting of the UN Security Council involving Ukraine, Germany, and Turkey. “I propose to hold a summit of the permanent members of the UN Security Council in the coming weeks, with the participation of Ukraine, Germany, and Turkey, to address the challenges of security in Europe,” he announced on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference.
Furthermore, according to the president, he is recommending that the UN Security Council develop “new, effective security guarantees for Ukraine.” Zelensky stated that such guarantees are needed now since Ukraine has not yet secured NATO membership, while remaining “in a grey zone — a security vacuum.”
Zelensky also added that he has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to convene a summit with the participating countries of the Budapest Memorandum. “To give up the world’s third nuclear potential, Ukraine was provided security guarantees. We do not have that weapon; we also lack security. A part of our state’s territory is also missing, and most importantly, millions of our citizens are no longer with us,” he said.
The president believes that Kyiv has the right to demand a shift from a policy of appeasement to ensuring guarantees of security and peace in Ukraine. “Since 2014, Ukraine has tried three times to invite consultations with the guarantor states of the Budapest Memorandum, but in vain. Today, Ukraine will do this for the fourth time. I will do this for the last time. I am initiating consultations within the framework of the Budapest Memorandum,” he declared.
