California Senate Approves Resolution for Cooperation with Syunik Province
The California State Senate has passed a resolution to establish sister state cooperation with the Syunik Province of Armenia. According to Armenpress, this information was provided by the Armenian National Committee of America. The resolution expresses California's solidarity with the southern Armenian region of Syunik.
It aims to foster mutually beneficial educational, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two administrative units. It is noted that Armenia and the United States are connected by a shared history, values of democracy, freedom, and prosperity, and the adoption of this resolution reaffirms that fact.
Nora Hovsepyan, the head of the Western Region of the Armenian National Committee of America, welcomed and praised the efforts of California Assemblymember Chris Holden in advancing the resolution. 'At such a critical time, when the sovereignty of Syunik is under severe threat from Azerbaijan and Turkey, California's bold step is a manifestation of solidarity that will strengthen the resolve of the Armenian people to stand firm against ongoing threats from aggressive Azerbaijani and Turkish actors in the region,' Hovsepyan stated.
California Assemblymember Chris Holden noted that strengthening relations with Syunik Province is taking place at a time when regional powers—Azerbaijan and Turkey—pose a threat to the existence and livelihood of the province. 'This resolution reaffirms California's solidarity with Armenia and our strong Armenian community of over 1 million. Today, we are creating lasting ties for a better tomorrow,' he said.
The resolution establishing sister state cooperation between California and Syunik Province was approved by the California Assembly on September 2, 2021.
