Erdogan's Proposals to Strip 13 Opposition MPs of Immunity to be Reviewed in Parliament
The proposals from the presidency to strip 13 members of the opposition People's Democratic Party (HDP) of their parliamentary immunity have reached the leadership of the Turkish Parliament. According to reports by Armenpress and Turkish media outlet hurriyet.com.tr, the proposals have been forwarded to a joint committee made up of members from the Constitutional and Justice Committee of Parliament.
Alongside the moves to deprive the party's lawmakers of immunity, the public prosecutor handling the case against the People's Democratic Party has called on the Constitutional Court to impose a ban on political activities for 451 members of the party. Actions and statements from 69 party members have been presented as grounds for the closure of the party.
If the Constitutional Court decides to close the party, those individuals will be barred from engaging in political activities and from joining other parties for a period of five years.
